The Wedding in Lyon is Stefan Zweig’s dramatic love story set in Lyon in 1793, during the French Revolution. The story takes place in a dark and damp cellar where a group of prisoners await execution for being anti-revolutionary. Among these people who feel the cold breath of death on their necks, two former fiancés who thought each other dead miraculously meet. In this atmosphere of despair, with the help of a priest among the inmates, they decide to get married, witnessed by the other inmates. They spend their last night before execution in a state of love and spiritual peace, free from the fear of death. The next morning, the couple is executed by firing squad on the banks of the Rhône River, but with the power of their love, they manage to turn even death into a vuslat. The work is a striking narrative that emphasizes the invincibility of the human spirit, hope and love even in the shadow of war and cruelty.
