In the beginning they were not railroad children. They lived with their parents in London. They were three sisters. Roberta, they called her Bobbie, was the eldest. Then came Peter, the middle one, who wanted to be an engineer when he grew up. The youngest was Phyllis, who always tried to be good.

Their mother was always at home, ready to read to them or play games with them. She would also write stories and read them to them after tea time.

These three lucky children had everything. Nice clothes, a warm home and lots of toys. And they had a father who never got angry and was always ready to play with them.

They were very happy. But they didn’t realize it until their life in London was over and they were forced to live a very different life.

The terrible change came out of nowhere.
